About Us

VCA Kennel Club Resort & Spa began in the early 1980s as a venture between two friends, Sharon Marks and Joyce Meyer. They realized the South Bay needed an upscale boarding kennel when they could not find a satisfactory facility for their own pets. Most kennels at that time were dark and dingy and did not have a good reputation at all. It became their mission to change that–they wanted to establish a kennel with a focus on high quality care and exceptional customer service. After a year of planning and building, The Kennel Club of Southern California opened in August, 1983.

The Kennel Club of Southern California was the South Bay’s first boarding facility to include runs made of solid panels with a barred door, keeping each run a lot more quiet than the traditional chain link of the time. This allowed pets to be much more comfortable and calm while boarding while allowing pets to still see a little of what is going on around them. In what seemed like no time at all, the facility was a hit with the area and was even totally booked for its first Christmas season.

The years that followed saw many changes as the facility was expanded to allow more pets to be boarded. In 1990, partners Sharon and Joyce expanded by opening a second facility. Then, in 1995, they dissolved their partnership and divided the businesses. Joyce took the helm of our facility and changed the name to Kennel Club Resort & Spa. The next few years saw exciting changes as our runs were completely renovated and we added our swimming pool, which became a huge hit with our clients almost overnight.

In 1998, Joyce decided to sell the facility to VCA Antech, a local company that operated more than 300 animal hospitals throughout the country. Since 1998, VCA Antech has graciously allowed us to operate our facility the way Joyce trained us. We continue to make sure all pets are cared for in a loving manner. It is our goal to make sure pets are returned to their families in the same condition as they were left–happy and with tails wagging!
